Restoring The Bride of YahuSha

The Day of Atonement

THE HISTORICAL ASPECTS OF THE FESTIVAL

Leviticus 23:26-32 YAH said to Moses, “The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to YAH by fire. Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before YAH your Creator ONE. Anyone who does not deny himself on that day must be cut off from his people. I will destroy from among his people anyone who does any work on that day. You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. It is a sabbath of rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”

The Day of Atonement is the most solemn of the festival of YAH, not a FEAST. This was the one day of the year were both Israel and the sanctuary received its cleansing, as special sacrifices were offered for atonement. Two goats would be offered, one unto YAH and the other, after the casting of lots, to be the “azazel - the scapegoat.” Only on this day, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies, carrying the blood of the sacrificed goat, which he sprinkled on the Mercy seat, reconciling the Priesthood and Israel with YAHUAH.

On the tenth day of the seventh month (Tishri) everything in the camp of Israel ceased. Only one man was busy, and that man was the high priest but now that is our MessiYah in heaven.

The Appointed Purpose of the Day of Atonement

Leviticus 16:30 because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before YAH, you will be clean from all your sins.

The word "atonement" is used 15 times in Leviticus 16. Among other things the Hebrew word means "to cover." Under the Old Testament economy, the blood of the sacrifices could not put away sin; it could only cover sin. The blood of bulls and goats could not take away sin; it could only cover sin. Only Yahushua Messiah's blood can take away sin.

John 1:29 The next day John saw Yahusha coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of the Creator ONE, who takes away the sin of the world!"

Atonement was needed to deal with the problem of sin. The Creator ONE is holy and man is sinful. Everything in the camp of Israel had been defiled by sin. Even the holy tabernacle of Creator ONE and the priesthood had been defiled by sin.

Leviticus 16:33 and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the people of the community. Of course, the people were defiled

Leviticus 16:21-22 He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert.

The Appointed Time of the Day of Atonement

The high priest did not do this every day of the week; he did this once a year.

Leviticus 16:2 YAH said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud over the atonement cover."

Once a year, the high priest was allowed to go into the Holy of Holies. Every year this ceremony had to be repeated because the sacrifices could not take away sin. Only the Lamb of YAHUAH can take away sin.

Hebrews 9:24-26 For Messiah did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in the Creator ONE’s presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Messiah would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.

The Appointed Place

YAHUAH had appointed only one place of sacrifice. The tabernacle (and later on the temple) was HIS appointed place. There is only one appointed place of sacrifice as far as salvation is concerned-the stake where Yahusha died.

1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the stake, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

Our Master did not bear our sins in the Jordan River when he was baptized, because baptism is not the way of salvation. Our Master did not bear our sins in the temple as He was teaching, because education, as good as it is, is not YAHUAH's way of salvation. Messiah bore our sins at the appointed place-the stake.

The Appointed Person

Not everyone was permitted to offer this sacrifice-only the high priest. Now it is MessiYah.

Leviticus 16:17 No one is to be in the Tent of Meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he comes out, having made atonement for himself, his household and the whole community of Israel. But today, we do not do this.

In other words, in the past, the high priest had to fulfill this responsibility alone. First, he took off his beautiful garments. Then he washed his flesh in water and put on the plain linen garments of a lowly servant.

Leviticus 16:4 He is to put on the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on.

This is a picture, of our Master Yahusha. There came a time when He laid aside His beautiful garments of esteem. He took upon Himself the form of a servant. He set Himself apart to do the will of YAHUAH. He came to earth and was obedient unto death.

YAHUAH's appointed person for today is Yahusha, the Messiah, our glorified High Priest in heaven. The Old Testament high priest had to offer sacrifices first for himself before he could offer sacrifices for the people. Yahusha needed no sacrifices for Himself, for He was holy, harmless, undefiled. Instead, He offered Himself as the sinless sacrifice for our sins.

The Appointed Price

Eighty-six times in the Book of Leviticus the blood is mentioned. It was not living animals that paid the price; it was dead animals offered as sacrifices. The blood had to be shed.

Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.

This is YAHUAH's plan, and we must accept it. We are not saved by imitating Messiah's example or by admiring His teaching. We are not saved by His character. We are saved by His shed blood. His precious blood was the price of atonement.

1 Peter 1:18-19 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Messiah, a lamb without blemish or defect.

The Appointed Procedure

1. The first thing the priest had to do was to kill the bullock for a sin offering for himself.

Leviticus 16:11 “Aaron shall bring the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, and he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering.

2. Then he took the incense into the Holy of Holies. This burning cloud of incense speaks of the esteem of YAH. Salvation is for the esteem of YAH, not just for the good of man.

Leviticus 16:12 He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before YAH and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain.

3. Then the high priest returned to the altar for the blood; he took it into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled it on the mercy seat, which was the Ark of the Covenant.

Leviticus 16:14 He is to take some of the bull’s blood and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover.

4. Then the high priest came back to the altar where two goats were waiting. He would kill one goat and take the blood into the Holy of Holies. That blood he sprinkled on the mercy seat.

Leviticus 16:15 “He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it.

5. He would then apply some of the blood to the brazen altar.

Leviticus 16:18-19 “Then he shall come out to the altar that is before YAH and make atonement for it. He shall take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar. He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and to consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.

6. The priest put his hands on the head of the living goat and confessed the sins of the people of Israel. Then that goat was taken out and turned loose in the wilderness, never to be seen again.

Leviticus 16:20-22 “When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting and the altar, he shall bring forward the live goat. He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert.

Psalm 103:12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

7. The high priest would then wash and clothe himself again in his garments, a picture of the fact that when our Messiah finished His sacrificial work, He returned to heaven and took His throne of glory.

Leviticus 16:23-25 “Then Aaron is to go into the Tent of Meeting and take off the linen garments he put on before he entered the Most Holy Place, and he is to leave them there. He shall bathe himself with water in a holy place and put on his regular garments. Then he shall come out and sacrifice the burnt offering for himself and the burnt offering for the people, to make atonement for himself and for the people. He shall also burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar."

The Appointed Response

What was the appointed response on the part of the people?

Leviticus 23:27-28 “The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to YAH by fire. Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before YAH, your Creator ONE.

This shows that salvation is not by works. The people did nothing - the priest did it all. They were not allowed to work. Instead, they were to show sorrow for their sin and, by faith, to accept what the Creator ONE had provided for them. The annual Day of Atonement speaks to us of YAHUAH's love and grace. There is nothing we can do.

Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

THE PROPHETIC SYMBOLS OF THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

• It spoke of the future atonement of Yahusha Messiah on tree (stake).

• It speaks of the future cleansing of Yahuah's people (Israel).

We learned in our study of the Festival of Trumpets that one day YAHUAH will call His elect people back to the land of Israel. At the second coming of Messiah, there will be a cleansing for the nation. When Master Yahusha Messiah shall return, the House of Judah shall look upon Him whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn because of their sin. As a result of this, there shall be a time of cleansing and purification, and the fountain shall be opened for sin and for uncleanness.

Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.

Zechariah 13:1 “On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.

Romans 11:25-27 For I do not want you to be ignorant of this secret, brothers, lest you should be wise in your own estimation, that hardening in part has come over Israel, until the completeness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel shall be saved, as it has been written: “The deliverer shall come of Zion; and he shall turn away wickedness from Jacob, and this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.”

It speaks of the future cleansing of all believers

We must be honest and admit that we are far from glorious and far from being free of spots, wrinkles and blemishes. But one of these days, we will be a glorious Bride without spot and wrinkle and without blemish when we stand before YAH.

Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Messiah loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

But it will not be just Israel's Day of Atonement. From among the nations of the world, many will not take the mark of the Anti-Messiah. And when Master Yahusha returns to the earth, many will repent of their sins before the Book of Life is forever closed. Yahusha has these Gentiles in mind in His Olivet Discourse.

Matthew 25:31-34 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

It is the multitude from among the nations, along with those from among the sons of Jacob, who will enter the millennial Kingdom still in mortal bodies (as distinct from the taking up and glorified Body of Messiah who will inhabit New Jerusalem).

There are seven days in between the Trumpets Day (1st and 2nd of Tishri) and Day of Atonement (10th of Tishri), representing the seven-year “Great Tribulation.” During its first three and a half-years, the “Two Witnesses” will be YAH’s servants in Jerusalem and through their ministry, a great revival will occur in Israel and throughout the nations! Thus, Yahusha will continue to save those who will repent of their sins and walk according to His Word. The total of eight days, counted from the conclusion of the Trumpets Day to the commencement of Day of Atonement, reflects, Hope, Chai (life) for those who will believe!

Atonement Day is also shows, that only believing, obedient “covered” Hebrews (Jews) and faithful believers in Yahusha (those 'caught up’ at the 7th trump just prior to the pouring out of the 7 bowls of wrath and all those redeemed during the 70th week) will enter the Millennium. We can praise and thank YAHUAH, our Creator ONE, because of the Messiah’s sacrifice and resurrection, no further blood sacrifice will be required, as the Word states.

Hebrews 9:11-15 But Messiah, having become a High Priest of the coming good matters, through the greater and more perfect Tent not made with hands, that is, not of this creation, entered into the Most Set-apart Place once for all, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood, having obtained everlasting redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the defiled, sets apart for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of the Messiah, who through the everlasting Spirit offered himself unblemished to the Creator ONE, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living Creator ONE? And because of this He is the Mediator of a renewed covenant, so that, death having taken place for redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, those that are called might receive the promise of the everlasting inheritance.
